Secrets, Stories, and Slurs
It is Lent, and even better yet, it is Holy Week. And do you know how you can tell? By checking the secular news and your local bookstore. There you will find fabulous stories of ossuaries, bones, Gospels of Judas and Secret Mark. And exactly what do these supposed "finds" have to do with Christianity? Not much at all. About all they do is make the Church the subject of titillating gossip and conjecture. Another chance to throw rotten tomatoes at Christianity. The Christian faith seems to be fair game for all sorts of nonsense that will die soon. When we celebrate the Resurrection these silly stories will disappear and the slurs will end...until next Lent. So, never fear, if you are unsure about when Lent is, just turn on the tv or pick up a newspaper and if there is some ridiculous story about secret gospels or hidden bones, well, chances are the season has begun.
